The Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel, the municipal art collection of Basel, dates back to 1661, when the city acquired the Amerbach Cabinet. It grew steadily over the centuries, necessitating several relocations within Basel. The Hauptbau on St. Alban-Graben was inaugurated in 1936. A first enlargement came in 1980, when the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart opened its doors; a third venue, known as the Neubau, was added in 2016.

In what ways have artists from the African continent and its far-flung diaspora processed the experience of the quotidian in their painting over the last 100 years? Koyo Kouoh, Director and Chief Curator of the Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, South Africa, and her team undertook extensive research to find out. The result is a comprehensive show that brings together works by 120 artists: a kaleidoscope of Black figurative painting over the last 100 years. Also scheduled to be on show at the Kunstmuseum Basel, Zeitz MOCAA has created a groundbreaking exhibition that demands to be seen.

Over the last fifty years, I've visited Basel's art museum several times and can highly recommend it. It should be better known internationally. If you go, it's cheaper to stay in Weil am Rhein, Germany, and walk over into Basel where hotels are a bit on the pricey side.

Einmal mehr meine Hochachtung an Carolin Emcke, die mich immer wieder beeindruckt mit ihrer klaren Sprache, ihrer tiefgründigen Denkweise, ihrer dabei bewahrten Menschlichkeit, Emotionalität, Authentizität. Und ja, auch ein Dank an Thomas Strässle, den ich von verschiedenen Stationen kenne und schätze.
Klare Sprache? Es ist teilweise eher ein Gestotter und ein geschraubtes Formulieren von doch recht banalen Dingen. Dazu kommt die unter deutschen Medienmenschen mittlerweile verbreitete grammatikalisch falsche Verwendung des Wortes "erinnern", die schon einmal Abzug in der B-Note gibt. Da macht es dann auch gar keine rechte Freude mehr sich mit dem Inhalt des Gesagten zu befassen.
